The good climate the Island experiences right throughout the year, has long made Madeira Island a favorite winter getaway for Europeans. Madeira weather, is what attracts Madeira seekers to the island. Madeira is abundant with picturesque landscapes of steep green mountains, dropping into valleys, terraced with vineyards and enchanting gardens. This Volcanic Island offers breathtaking views of ragged coastlines, volcanic sea pools, caves, mountain trails and levada pathways. Madeira Walks are considered to be in the top ten in the world when it comes to levada walking, trekking or hiking. Levada ( open irrigation channels) walks are a perfect way to view the fantastic natural sights, Madeira has on offer. Many of them cut through the Laurisilva Forest which is the biggest of its kind in the world. This forest which was proclaimed as a world heritage by UNESCO in 1999, contains numerous rare and endemic species of fauna and flora. The sea water temperatures are pleasant all year round aided by the influence of the Gulf stream. Thus the shores of Madeira are visited by numerous species of whales, dolphins, and turtles right through the year! It is no wonder that the island of Madeira has acquired nicknames such as the Pearl of the Atlantic or the Floating Garden of Eden.

First time visitors are always left speechless by the overwhelming beauty of the island. As you arrive to Funchal from the airport, nothing quite prepares you for the spectacular sight of the city surrounded by mountains, the deep blue sea, the green valleys, the rolling cluster of houses with beautiful gardens and its stunning bay.

There is so much to see and do in Madeira that visitors soon discover that a week is nowhere near enough to cover the whole island.

Funchal

Funchal, regarded as one of the most cleanest cities in europe, is interwoven between the modern new buildings and 500 years of history. Besides all the cultural events that take place right through the year there is numerous museums, gardens and places of interest that can keep you occupied right through your holidays.

Madeira Walking

Madeira walking or Levada walks have become so popular on the island that you find more and more tourists are visiting Madeira on walking holidays. And why wouldn't they? With its mild climate and fantastic scenery right around the island these levada walks offer a source of never ending pleasure. There are walks for all types of walkers in Madeira.

Boat Trips

Boat Trips are another popular pastime in Madeira. Starting off from the Marina of Funchal, you get the opportunity to sale out around the island and even to the neighboring desertas islands which is a nature park. On most trips you get to see the hundreds of species of dolphins and whales that visit these waters right around the year.

Island Tours

Touring the island is of course the best way to get to see all that this, rich in nature, island has to offer. There is so much to see on both the east and west side of the island that most trips offered will take up the whole day. There are a couple of of good half day tours on offer as well. Because of the type of roads you get in Madeira, tours are best done in air-conditioned minibuses or jeeps.

Fishing

Fishing in Madeira is a fantastic experience. The good climate combined with the calm waters of the Atlantic sets the ideal conditions for all types of fishing, such as big game fishing, sports fishing, bottom fishing etc. The type of fishing offered, depends on the time of season. Nightlife

Nightlife in Funchal is filled with fun and exciting things to do for people of all ages. There are hundreds of restaurants, offering local as well as popular international cuisines, to satisfy everyone's tastes. Entertainment is offered in forms of local folklore singing and dancing, cabaret shows, discotheques, casino etc.

What to do & see in Funchal

Funchal is full of things to do and see. So if you are arriving by cruise ship or visiting for a couple of days, be prepared to have a real good time, on everything Funchal has to offer. From cafes, museums, typical architecture, and gardens to Funchal sightseeing bus, cable cars, toboggan rides and various boat rides.
